Graphic Design Trends 2014

At Creative Curiosity we like to keep up with the current design trends so here are the top ten we have noticed are building in 2014.

  1. FLAT DESIGN:
Flat design is a trend that doesn’t use drop shadows or gradients which therefore gives it an updated and clean look. Flat design emphasises functionality and ease-of-use over looks. The flat design is also a more colourful and crisp design rather than the old fashioned ‘splash’ design.
  2. LARGE IMAGES:
Having large imagery reduces the need for embellishments. To have large images the photography has to be simple but at the same time eye catching.
  3. PARALLAX SCROLLING:
Parallax websites add movement to flat, 2d web-pages. A Parallax site involves a background layer and foreground, which when you scroll, the background layer moves at a slower rate than the foreground layer to give the illusion of action.
  4. GIFS AND SOCIAL MEDIA VIDEOS:
Gifs and social media videos is a new media platform called Vine, which allows you to create short videos with just one touch of a button.
  5. INTERACTIVE INFOGRAPHICS:
Interactive infographics is becoming more advanced and fun for some of their elements but because of its ability to be user controlled it is keeping people more engaged and interested for longer periods of time.
  6. MIX AND MATCH TYPOGRAPHY/ HANDWRITTEN FONTS:
With the mix and match fonts it allows the designers to display lots more content without the page looking cluttered. Mix and match fonts as well as headlines draw the eye of readers and it highlights certain words. Handwritten fonts represents the new desire for an authentic, handcrafted and personal feel to websites.
  7. LARGE TYPE:
Large type/ fonts make it easy for people to read so that it isn’t hard for people to read. With the increasing emphasis on intelligibility and content over aesthetics, larger point headlines will become more standard.
  8. INSTAGRAM STYLE PHOTOS:
Instagram style photos are more commonly liked as it creates a warming to photos as if it was taken on someone else’s IPhone. The Instagram app allows you to apply affects to the photos that they’ve just taken and upload it straight to the World Wide Web.
  9. HAND-CRAFTED VECTORS:
Part of the ‘authentic’ and ‘hand-crafted’ trend, artist drawn vectors remind users that there’s a real person behind the process. Hand crafted vectors designed by a skilled designer can make your website go from bland to AMAZING! Hand drawn vectors will give any brand its own style which is clever and personalised.
  10. COLOUR PREDICTIONS:
Fashion is at the forefront of the colour industry and always determines the colour trends for the year throughout the whole design industry.
